Federate or Die!

It's really quite simple.
So here's how the Social Networking space has cycled for the last decade: you inevitably piss off your users, who then move to another network that then gains critical mass.
Do you then:

Federate and easily allow users to migrate from/to your network as you adjust your strategy/service to be more competitive with others? or...
-
Lose users and die.
